VALENTIN POPOV is a Ukrainian artist, born in Kiev and living for more than 25 years in USA. He graduated from Kiev Academy of Fine Arts of Ukraine and later had a teaching practice in University of California and San Francisco Art Institute. In 2016 Valentin was admitted as Foreign member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. At the meeting in the America house he will beawarded the Diploma of the Academy.
He is an example of self-made talent, who is admired and recognized abroad. His works are in collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York Public Library, Zimmerli Art Museum-The State University of New Jersey, Museum of Russian-American History of Alaska, Sitka, Duke University Museum of Art, Durham, North Carolina and many others.
"Now in his adopted country, Popov has seized the newness, crassness, abundance and glamour of American culture. Like a very hungry child in a giant supermarket, he wants to taste everything. His recent art reflects this manic appetite for the visual imagery and spoken phrase that now infuses his work."
Robert Flynn Johnson, curator , Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
"When I first saw Valentin Popov's paintings they gave me a shock. The art had a fetishistic splendor that astounded the eye and confounded the mind. Here again, it seemed, was that melting museum of my dream. "
Barnaby Conrad III, publisher
"The well-delineated eye is a Popovian signature. The eye is a two-way vestibule through which we see others at the same time as we see ourselves reflected. The eye is both a window and a mirror."
Gilbert Alter-Gilbert, critic, literary historian
