Swimming Wasn't Allowed in the Plant's Aquatorium under the curatorship of Zhanna Kadyrova and Maya Kolesnik is the first large presentation of the works by those artists who have worked on the territory of the former Odesa Shipyard SRZ-2 in recent years, turning it into a unique cultural cluster and transmedial laboratory.
In just a few years, the private complex of SRZ-2 has become a symbiosis of sculpture, painting, silk-screen and music studios, engineering workshops and an atelier. The conditions that made this organic synthesis and dialogue of arts possible are exceptional to the сontemporary Ukrainian art history.
The exhibition examines the phenomenon of the emergence of self-organized creative community, conditions and modalities of consolidation, and, in particular, the space itself as a basic condition: an abandoned ship repair plant in the historic centre of Odesa, which is threatened to be demolished today due to the coastline development projects priorities. Drawing on the experience of the SRZ-2 art cluster, the project raises issues of the precarious situation of the artist in society and the opportunities for artists to realize and develop their full potential.
The exhibition includes works by such artists as Zhenya Volno, Vasya Dmytryk, Maxim Zatsarinniy, Zhanna Kadyrova, Pavlo Klymenko, Commercialpublicart, Natalia Kushnir, Natalia Marynenko, MNPL, Denis Ruban, Ereh Saw, Mykyta Tyshchenko, Daria Chechushkova, Ksenia Shcherbakova, and other.
It also presents artefacts and other evidence of the plant's past life, archival materials and documentation of its transformation.
