 METANOIA

…From the Projection of One’s Own to the Reality of the Other

As a breath of fresh air in a stuffy atmosphere we need a space for vulnerability. This is the only possibility to find ourselves in something real. In an exhausting search we first approach self-sacrifice as a possibility to touch reality. Then we come to rethinking of the close contact with the environment as such that gives possibility of encounter with something different than we are, with something new comparing to our endless projections. And further goes repentance… as a result of enlightenment and sudden shortsightedness of existence detected in ourselves. These first steps became obvious and possible only after a long search for freedom. These steps led to the new grounds: to the re-opening of essence, feeling of reality of the other feature as an open project, and finally, they brought the true overcoming of the loneliness of human soul.

Metanoia hints, that beyond the limits of ratio man is no more satisfied with his notion of himself and of the outer world. The abilities of his mind are limited by something beyond the comprehension. This is the moment of almost tactile realizing: cognition is not the only way of interacting with reality.

The conceptual solution of the project presents Victor Sydorenko’s work relevant not only to the time challenge, demonstrating acuteness of the moment, but as some kind of a metanarrative that reveals certain universal anthropological constants and proposes the view of what is happening to man in varying reality. It gives the possibility to track the dynamics of transition from the one state of interaction with reality to another one. Certain creative-consecutive process exposes how man accepts challenges of reality and learns to respond. The personality formation process is being clarified: from an inquirer through a man, interpreting the answers,- towards a man, answering the voice of reality. Including the metaphysical reality of the Other.

This is the story of a character, who is searching for his vulnerability from the very beginning, and who is acquiring his distinctive face in this process. His way is the movement to himself, to his identity. It is movement towards the truth in relations with environment, towards the truth, that overcomes the limits of subjectivity patterns and former social guidelines.

In the cultural context the metanarrative of Metanoia project outlines the contours of the novelty that gets over backward social and cultural mechanisms, the inertness of old paradigms. Therefore the project may be considered to be one of the precedents of overcoming the postmodern situation and actualizing quite important question of where we appear to be after coping with the postmodernism…

Victor Sydorenko is one of the leaders of modern Ukrainian art. In 2003, the author presented Ukraine at the jubilee 50-th Venice Biennale. Later he became co-curator and commissioner of the series of Ukrainian projects in Venice. Victor Sydorenko is honored Prominent Actor of Ukraine and National Artist of Ukraine.  He is the member and vice president of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine. Victor's pathway from realism to neoavantgardism is first of all a tribute to the full freedom of creativity of the generation that was growing and working at a totalitarian regime. Time, memory and history are the central ideas of the artist's projects, which extrapolate their polyvariance and different interpretations into the language of visual images and constructions.
